Ness Construction LLC believes people's homes are a reflection of themselves and should be designed to enhance who they are as a person.

A client's personality and how they live within a space all need to function well, add balance and harmonize with the individuals living within a space from the color of the room to furnishings to design of the actual area - it all needs to be accounted for.

Ness Construction's and Sustainability.

Ness Construction provides contracting solutions for eco-conscious Central New Yorkers. Ithaca-area residents are among the most environmentally aware in the country, and we're proud to offer creative, sustainable design and construction services to our neighbors.

Many people are unaware of the damaging toxins and hazards in their homes. Formaldehyde, for instance, can be found in everything from PVC piping to vinyl tiles to insulation. We'll help you find smart alternatives to build a better home for you and the environment.

Alternative Building Techniques and Materials
When possible we take advantage of natural elements to increase the efficiency and comfort of our designs. A little creativity can go a long way toward making your home sustainable, not to mention beautiful!

  • Living roofs and walls make any space more beautiful and promote good environmental health. Rooftop vegetation helps purify the air and cools your home in summer. Add living walls and you greatly reduce storm water runoff, a dangerous source of flooding, drinking water contamination, and erosion. For more information visit www.livingroofs.org.
  • Straw bale building is a unique way to get high R-values, handcrafted work, and lots of curves! Straw bales lend themselves best to post and beam construction, and as infill for walls. They provide structural strength and fantastic insulation. Though hand plastering the exterior and interior of straw bale walls can be labor-intensive and a bit pricey, each home is a work of unique art. Natural materials and a more organic shape make straw bales an exciting, healthy alternative for people who want a distinct, sustainable home. For more information visit www.strawbale.org.
  • Concrete counters can provide a creative custom solution for your kitchen and bath. Curvy countertops are a great alternative to the straight lines offered by stone, laminate or other solid surfaces—and imagination is the only limit to color and shape. You can find some fresh ideas at www.stonesoupconcrete.com.
  • Hardiplank siding, such as fiber cement, comes with a fifty-year warranty and is very green-friendly. Fiber cement is less expensive than cedar and far easier to maintain. Stronger and more natural-looking than vinyl, fiber cement has revolutionized home siding. Learn more at www.jameshardie.com.

Because we offer both creative design and reliable construction, your building experience will be seamless—and affordable. We are not architects but many times work with architects and engineers on projects. It is important to remember that even if you have an architect or engineer draw your plans for a building permit, there are still many details to work through, such as cabinetry, flooring, molding details, and much more.

Change is a natural part of the process, especially once the space begins to take shape. That said, you must understand the importance of communicating these changes to your contractor, and that your changes could impact the cost, scope, and timeline of the project. Your satisfaction is our first priority, and we'll work with you to document any desired changes in your order.

Using green building materials helps us build a healthier home for you and your family, while lessening the environmental "footprint" construction can leave behind. Natural building materials drastically reduce toxins in and around your home. By eliminating hazardous materials from our work, we can build healthy homes for our clients and for the future.

Some materials cost more initially but save more money (and energy) over time than cheaper alternatives. It is important to understand all the options and the implications to make the best possible choices. We are happy to help you figure out if going green can save you green.

Indeed we are.
